Aryan Nations (AN) is an international white supremacist, Neo-Nazi organization that is affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan. It was founded in the 1970s by Richard Girnt Butler as an arm of the Christian Identity group Church of Jesus Christ-Christian.
History
Its origin lies in the teachings of Wesley Swift, a significant figure in the early Christian Identity movement. Swift combined British Israelism, extreme antisemitism, and political militancy. He founded his own church in California in the mid 1940s where he could preach this ideology. In addition, he had a daily radio broadcast in California during the 1950s and 60s. In 1957, the name of his church was changed to the Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, which is used today by Aryan Nations churches.
From the 1970s until 2001 the headquarters of the AN was in a 20 acre (81,000 m²) compound at Hayden Lake, Idaho. There were a number of state chapters, only loosely tied to the main organization. The group ran an annual "World Congress of Aryan Nations" at Hayden Lake for both AN adherents and other right-wing groups.
Some in the AN openly debated a plan to forcibly take five northwestern states - Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming - from the United States government in order to establish an Aryan homeland.
In September 2000 the Southern Poverty Law Center won a $6.3 million judgment against the Aryan Nations (Bill Sali representing) from an Idaho jury who awarded punitive and compensatory damages to a woman and her son who were attacked by Aryan Nations guards. The lawsuit stemmed from the July 1998 attack when Aryan Nations security guards in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho shot at Victoria Keenan and her son. Bullets struck their car several times, and subsequently the car crashed, after which one of the Aryan Nations guards held the Keenans at gunpoint. As a result of the judgement, Richard Butler turned over the 20-acre compound to the Keenans, who in turn sold the property to a philanthropist, who donated the land to North Idaho College, which designated it a "peace park." Currently, while tours are occasionally given on the property, cows use it for pasture. In February 2001, the group's Hayden Lake compound and intellectual property, including the names "Aryan Nations" and "Church of Jesus Christ Christian", were transferred to the Keenans. In the fall of 2000, fellow Sandpoint, Idaho millionaire Vincent Bertollini provided Butler with a new house in Hayden, Idaho.
Until 1998 the leadership of the AN remained firmly in the hands of Butler. But by that year he was over eighty and had been in poor health for some time, so at the annual "World Congress", Neuman Britton was appointed as the group's new leader. In August 2001, however, Butler appointed Harold Ray Redfeairn from Ohio, who had been agitating for control since the mid-1990s. Shortly thereafter, Redfeairn and August Kreis, III, propaganda minister of Aryan Nations, led a splinter group away from Butler and was expelled from the organization, but a few months later Redfeairn returned to an alliance with Butler. Redfeairn died in October of 2003. Butler died of heart failure in September 2004.
At the time of his death Aryan Nations had 200 members, Butler's World Congress in 2002 drew fewer than 100 people, and when he ran for mayor, he lost by about 2,100 votes to 50.

The term Aryan originates with the Indo-Iranian self-designation arya, attested in the ancient texts of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism, the Rigveda and the Gathas of Zoroaster.
Since, in the 19th century, the Indo-Iranians were the most ancient known speakers of "Indo-European" languages, the word Aryan was adopted to refer not only to the Indo-Iranian people, but also to Indo-European speakers as a whole, including the Armenians, Romans, Greeks, the Germans, Balts, Celts and Slavs. It was argued that all of these languages originated from a common root - now known as Proto-Indo-European - spoken by an ancient people who must have been the original ancestors of the European, Iranian, and Indo-Aryan peoples. The ethnic group composed of the Proto-Indo Europeans and their modern descendants was termed the Aryans with the idea of distinctive behavioral and ancestral ethnicity marked by language distribution.
Max Müller is often identified as the source of the concept. In his Vorlesungen über die Wissenschaft der Sprache (Lectures on the Science of Language) in 1861 he referred to Aryans as a 'race'. However, when this was interpreted to imply a biologically distinct sub-group of humanity, he soon clarified his meaning, insisting that it was very dangerous to mix lingustics and anthropology. He restated his opposition to this method in 1888 in his essay Biographies of words and the home of the Aryas.
This usage was common in the late 19th and early 20th century. An example of an influential best-selling book that reflects this usage is the 1920 book The Outline of History by H. G. Wells. In it he wrote of the accomplishments of the Aryan people, stating how they "learned methods of civilization" while "Sargon II and Sardanapalus were ruling in Assyria and fighting with Babylonia and Syria and Egypt". As such, Wells suggested that the Aryans had eventually "subjugated the whole ancient world, Semitic, Aegean and Egyptian alike".
In Germany, Rudolf Virchow launched a study of craniometry, which gave surprising results according to contemporary scientific racism, in particular concerning the "Aryan race" and the Nordic theory. This prompted Virchow to denounce "Nordic mysticism" in the 1885 Anthropology Congress in Karlsruhe, while Josef Kollmann , a collaborator of Virchow, stated in the same congress that the people of Europe, be them German, Italian, English or French, belonged to a "mixture of various races," furthermore declaring that the "results of craniology" led to "struggle against any theory concerning the superiority of this or that European race" on others. Virchow's contribution to the debate sparked a controversy, Houston Stewart Chamberlain attacking in particular Josef Kollmann. While the "Aryan race" theory remained popular, in particular in Germany, some authors defended Virchow's perspective, in particular Otto Schrader, Rudolph von Jhering and the ethnologist Robert Hartmann (1831-1893), who proposed to ban the notion of "Aryan" from anthropology.
The usage of Aryan to mean "all Indo-Europeans" is now regarded by most scholars as obsolete, though it is still seen occasionally and some people continue this usage. In today's English, "Aryan", if used at all in scholarly contexts, is normally synonymous to Indo-Iranian, or Proto-Indo-Iranian. The idea that the north Europeans were the "purest" of these people was later theorized by the Comte de Gobineau and by other writers, most notably his disciple Houston Stewart Chamberlain, who wrote of an "Aryan race"—those who spoke Indo-European languages and were claimed to be the "noblest" of people.
NAZISM
The theory of the Northern origins of the Aryans was particularly influential in Germany. It was widely believed that the "Vedic Aryans" were ethnically identical to the Goths, Vandals and other ancient Germanic peoples of the Völkerwanderung. This idea was often intertwined with anti-Semitic ideas. The distinctions between the "Aryan" and "Semitic" peoples were based on the aforementioned linguistic and ethnic history. Semitic peoples came to be seen as a foreign presence within Aryan societies, and the Semitic peoples were often pointed to as the cause of conversion and destruction of social order and values leading to culture and civilization's downfall by proto-Nazi and Nazi theorists such as Houston Stewart Chamberlain and Alfred Rosenberg.
According to the adherents to Ariosophy, the Aryan was a "master race" that built a civilization that dominated the world from Atlantis about ten thousand years ago. This alleged civilization declined when other parts of the world were colonized after the 8,000 BC destruction of Atlantis because the inferior races mixed with the "Aryans" but it left traces of their civilization in Tibet (via Buddhism), and even in Central America, South America, and Ancient Egypt. (The date of 8,000 BC for the destruction of Atlantis in Ariosophy is 2,000 years later than the date of 10,000 BC given for this event in Theosophy.) These theories affected the more esotericist strand of Nazism.
A complete, highly speculative theory of Aryan and anti-Semitic history can be found in Alfred Rosenberg's publication, Race and Race History. Rosenberg's well researched account of ancient history was very effective in spreading racialism among German intellectuals in the early 20th century, especially after the first World War.
These and other ideas evolved into the Nazi use of the term "Aryan race" to refer to what they saw as being a master race of people of northern European descent. They worked to maintain the purity of this race through eugenics programs (including anti-miscegenation legislation, compulsory sterilization of the mentally ill and the mentally deficient, the execution of the institutionalized mentally ill as part of a euthanasia program.
Heinrich Himmler (the Reichsfuhrer of the SS), the person ordered by Adolf Hitler to implement the final solution (Holocaust), told his personal masseur Felix Kersten that he always carried with him a copy of the ancient Aryan scripture, the Bhagavad Gita because it relieved him of guilt about what he was doing — he felt that like the warrior Arjuna, he was simply doing his duty without attachment to his actions.[20]
Neo-Nazism
Since the military defeat of Nazi Germany by the Allies in 1945, Neo-Nazi ideologues have expanded their concept of the "Aryan Race" from the Nazi concept that the purest Aryans were the Teutonics or Nordics of Northern Europe to the idea that the true Aryans are everyone descended from the Western or European branch of the Indo-European peoples. This is sometimes referred to as "pan-Aryanism". The degree of inclusivity varies between factions. This usage totally inverts the meaning of "Aryan" from the way it is used by most non-Neo-Nazis today, i.e., to refer to the Eastern or Asian (Indo-Iranian) branch of the Indo-European peoples. However, as noted above and below in the references, some people still use the term Aryan in its earlier sense as denoting all Indo-Europeans.
Many Neo-Nazis view their political work as being directed towards the establishment of an autocratic state to be called the Western Imperium. This proposed autocratic state would be led by a Führer-like figure and include all areas inhabited by the Aryan race (defined as non-Jews of European ancestry) i.e. Europe, Russia, Anglo-America, Australia, New Zealand, and southern South America. This concept is based on a 1947 book called Imperium: The Philosophy of History and Politics by Francis Parker Yockey.[23] It is envisioned that after the "Western Imperium" is established, all Jews and non-white illegal immigrants would be expelled from its territory. Only those of the "Aryan race" would be full citizens of the State. Miscegenation would be outlawed. The State would mandate a two-child family to keep the population at replacement level to preserve the environment. Television would be used extensively for propaganda. There would be an aggressive program of space exploration. There would be strict environmental protection and animal rights laws (see Ecofascism). It is usually envisioned that the flag of the "Western Imperium" would be like the red Nazi flag, except within the white disc would be a black-colored nationalistic stylized Celtic cross rather than a black swastika. Some Neo-Nazi groups, however, such as the Libertarian National Socialist Green Party envisage using a green instead of a red flag for the "Western Imperium" to express Neo-Nazi concern about preserving the environment
THE ARYAN RACE
OUR Fifth Root Race has already been in existence, as a race sui generis and quite free from its parent stem -- about one million years. Therefore it must be inferred that each of the four preceding sub-races has lived approximately 210,000 years; thus each family race -- of which there are seven in each sub-race -- has an average existence of about 30,000 years. The knowledge of the foregoing, and the accurately correct division, formed part and parcel of the Mysteries, where these sciences were taught to the disciples, and where they were transmitted by one hierophant to another.
The duration of the periods that separate, in space and time, the Fourth from the Fifth Race, in the historical or even the legendary beginnings of the latter -- is too tremendous for us to offer, even to a Theosophist, any more detailed accounts of them. During the course of the post-diluvian ages, marked at certain periodical epochs by the most terrible cataclysms, too many races and nations were born, and have disappeared almost without leaving a trace, for any one to offer a description of the slightest value concerning them. Whether the Masters of Wisdom have a consecutive and full history of our race from its incipient stage down to the present time; whether they possess the uninterrupted record of man since he became the complete physical being, and became thereby the king of the animals and master of this earth -- is not for the writer to say.
Most probably they have, and this is our own personal conviction. But if so, this knowledge is only for the highest Initiates, who do not take their students into their confidence. The writer can, therefore, give but what she herself has been taught, and no more.
The Egyptians, as well as the Greeks and "Romans" some thousand years ago, were "remnants of the Atlanto-Aryans," i.e., the former, the Egyptians, were of the older, or Ruta-Atlanteans; the last named, the descendants of the last race of that island (Poseidonis) whose sudden disappearance was narrated to Solon by the Egyptian initiates. (The earliest Paleolithic men in Europe, about whose origin Ethnology is silent, and whose characteristics are but imperfectly known, were of pure Atlantean and Africo-Atlantean stocks. The pure Atlantean stocks -- of which the tall Quaternary cave-men were the direct descendants -- immigrated to Europe long prior to the Glacial period; in fact as far back as the Pliocene and Miocene times in the Tertiary. These colonists were portions of the once glorious race, whose cycle from the Eocene downwards had been running down the scale.)
The highest people now on earth (spiritually) belong to the first sub-race of the Fifth Root Race; and those are the Aryan-Asiatics. The archaic records show the Initiates of the second sub-race of the Aryan family moving from one land to the other for the purpose of supervising the building of menhirs and dolmens, of colossal Zodiacs in stone, and places of sepulchre to serve as receptacles for the ashes of generations to come. When was it? The fact of their crossing from France to Great Britain by land may give an idea of the date when such a journey could have been performed on terra firma.
The modern archeologist, though speculating ad infinitum upon the dolmens and their builders, knows, in fact, nothing of them or their origin. Yet these weird, and often colossal monuments of unhewn stones -- which consist generally of four or seven gigantic blocks placed together -- are strewn over Asia, Europe, America and Africa, in groups or rows. Stones of enormous size are found placed horizontally and variously upon two, three, four, and as in Poitou, upon six and seven blocks. People name them "devil's altars," druidic stones, and giant tombs. The stones of Carnac, Brittany, nearly a mile in length and numbering 11,000 ranged in eleven rows -- are twin sisters of those at Stonehenge. The conical menhir of Loch-Maria-Ker in Morbihan, measures twenty yards in length and nearly two yards across. The menhir of Champ Dolent (near St. Malo) rises thirty feet above the ground, and is fifteen feet in depth below. Such dolmens and prehistoric monuments are found in almost every latitude ... in the Mediterranean basin; in Denmark, in Shetland and in Sweden ... in Germany where they are called the giant tombs; in Spain and Africa; in Palestine and Algeria; in Sardinia; in Malabar in India, where they are called the tombs of the Daityas and the Rakshasas; in Russia and Siberia where they are known as the Koorgan; in Peru and Bolivia, where they are termed the chulpas or burial places.
That no gigantic skeletons have been hitherto found in the tombs is yet no reason to say that there never were the remains of giants in them. Cremation was universal till a comparatively recent period -- some 80,000 to 100,000 years ago. Nevertheless, the classics often speak of giant skeletons still excavated in their day. Nor were all such cyclopean structures intended for sepulchres. It is with the so-called Druidical remains, such as Carnac in Brittany and Stonehenge in Great Britain, that the traveling Initiates had to do. And these gigantic monuments are all symbolical records of the world's History. They are not Druidical, but universal. Nor did the Druids build them, for they were only the heirs to the cyclopean lore left to them by generations of the mighty builders -- and "magicians" good and bad.
The mystery veiling the origin and religion of the Druids is as great as that of their supposed fanes is to the modern Symbologist, but not so to the initiated Occultists. Their priests were the descendants of the last Atlanteans, and what is known of them is sufficient to allow the inference that they were Eastern priests akin to the Chaldeans and Indians, though little more. They were connected in their esoteric teachings with the universal Wisdom Religion, and thus presented affinities with the exoteric worship of all.
Of the third sub-race of the Aryan Fifth Race is asserted the following: "The first three 'divine or astronomical Dynasties' who taught the Third Root Race, after having abandoned the Atlanteans to their doom, returned (or re-descended, rather) during the third sub-race of the Fifth, in order to reveal to saved humanity the mystery of their birthplace -- the sidereal heavens." The same symbolical record of the human races and the three Dynasties (Gods, Manes -- semi-divine astrals of the Third and Fourth, and the "Heroes" of the Fifth Race) which preceded the purely human kings, was found in the distribution of the tiers and passages of the Egyptian Labyrinth.
Man's size was reduced from fifteen to ten or twelve feet ever since the third sub-race of the Aryan stock, which sub-race -- born and developed in Europe and Asia Minor under new climates and conditions -- had become European.
The fourth sub-race witnessed the destruction of the last remnant of the Atlanteans -- the Aryo-Atlanteans in the last island of Atlantis, namely, 11,000 years ago. We find the last of the Atlanteans, still mixed up with the Aryan element, at that time. This shows the enormous overlapping of one race over the race that succeeds it, though in characters and external type the elder loses its characteristics, and assumes the new features of the younger race.
"Surely if the Hindu Puranas give a description of wars on continents and islands situated beyond Western Africa in the Atlantic Ocean -- then their Puranas must be older than those Phoenicians (placed at from 2,000 to 3,000 years B.C.)." "In the above accounts," writes an Adept, "the Hindus speak of this island as existing and in great power (Poseidonis); it must, therefore, have been more than 11,000 years ago." But another calculation and proof may be adduced of the great antiquity of the Aryan Hindus who knew of it (because they had once dwelt in it) and described the last surviving island of Atlantis -- or rather of that remnant of the Eastern portion of that continent which had perished soon after the upheaval of the two Americas -- the two Varshas of Pushkara. This latter proof is based on astronomical calculations.
The Aryan Races, for instance, now varying from dark brown, almost black, red-brown, yellow, down to the whitest creamy color, are yet of one and the same stock -- the Fifth Root Race -- and sprang from one single progenitor, called in Hindu esotericism by the generic name of Vaivasvata Manu; the latter, remember, being that generic personage, the Sage, who is said to have lived over eighteen million years ago, and also 850,000 years ago -- at the time of the sinking of the last remnants of the great continent of Atlantis, and who is said to live even now in his mankind. The light yellow is the color of the first solid human race, which appeared after the middle of the Third Root Race (after its fall into generation), bringing on the final changes. For it is only at that period that the last transformation took place, and brought forth man as he now is, only on a magnified scale. This Race gave birth to the Fourth Race -- "Siva" gradually transforming that portion of humanity which became "black with sin" into red-yellow (the red Indians and the Mongolians being the descendants of those) and finally into brown-white races -- which now, together with the yellow races, form the great bulk of humanity.
It is to the period of the Third Root Race that we have to look for the first appearance of the Ancestors of those who are termed by us the most ancient peoples of the world -- now called the Aryan Hindus, the Egyptians and the oldest Persians on the one hand, and the Chaldees and Phoenicians on the other. But it is the sub-race (of the Lemurians) which preceded the one that separated sexually, that is to be regarded as the spiritual ancestor of our present generations, and especially of the Eastern Aryan races.
Aryanization
(German Arisierung) in Nazism is a term used for the expropriation of Jews, Roma, Slavs, Poles, Communists, mentally and physically handicapped in Nazi Germany, Austria and the territories it controlled. It was based on the ideology of an Aryan master race and generally was to the benefit of Nazi supporters and party members. The term is also used to refer to the sifting of conquered peoples by the Nazis in order to "improve" the population by removing individuals who failed to conform to their racial ideals.
Exclusion of Jews
By January 1, 1938, German Jews were prohibited from operating businesses and trades, and from offering goods and services. In the Autumn of 1938, only 40,000 of the formerly 100,000 Jewish businesses were still in the hands of their original owners. Aryanization was completed with the enactment of a regulation, the Verordnung zur Ausschaltung der Juden aus dem deutschen Wirtschaftsleben of November 12, 1938, through which the remaining businesses were transferred to non-Jewish owners and the proceeds taken by the state. Jewelry, stocks, real property and other valuables had to be sold below market value. Jewish employees were fired, and self-employed people were prohibited from working in their respective professions.
Many important businesses were sold and re-sold in the course of the process, some of which (such as the Hertie department store) played an important role during the post-war Wirtschaftswunder years in West Germany.
In a broader sense, the term Aryanization is sometimes used to refer to eviction of Jewish scientists and people engaged in the cultural sector.
Non-Jews
Aryanization primarily affected Jews, since they often held influential professional positions from which the Nazis wished to "purge" them. However, laws against intermarriage between Aryans and non-Aryans also affected the small black and mixed race population of Germany. The Roma (Gypsies) provided a problem since they were technically Aryan (as native speakers of an Indo-Aryan language), but were deemed by the Nazis to be racially tainted. After a period of ambiguity, Roma were treated as "non-Aryan".
Nordicising conquered peoples
After the conquest of Czechoslovakia and Poland, the Nazis were keen to "improve" the racial make-up of those areas that were intended to form a permanent part of the Greater Germany. People were judged according to Nordicist ideals of racial identity. Those who conformed to this ideal were more likely to be Germanised than those who did not. This process is sometimes referred to as "Aryanization", though strictly speaking this is a misnomer, since Czechs and Poles were already members of the Aryan race. However, for the Nazis, Poles and East Slavs were considered to be Untermenschen (sub-human).
